Introduction to the Artist

I believe in the power of color.  Colors can energize us, lift our spirits, or calm our nerves.  For that reason, I don't limit my palette in the studio.  I work with a broad range of colors but I am particularly fond of certain color combinations because of the energy they bring to me such as purple and green and pink and orange.  I especially enjoy painting with brighter, warmer colors in the cold New England winter. I love to go into the studio on a dreary, gray winter day and open those tubes of bright paint and spreading cheer on each canvas.  And in the summer, I am ready to cool things off by using soothing blues and cooler greens.

When I paint, I am not trying to accurately depict something.  I’d take out my camera for that. Instead I am trying to convey an emotion or an experience such as what it was like to be walking in the forest among the falling leaves. Or trying to capture the energy of a spring bloom bursting open.

I learned to see by looking through the lens of a camera, something I have been doing since the age of 10.  As a photographer, my goal is to inspire people to take a closer look at the world around them.  Usually we are moving too fast to notice a spider web with the morning dew or the patterns from the rain in the sand.  There is beauty all around us.  We just have to open our eyes and be in the moment to notice the small wonders that surround us each day.
